Juvenile Matters in New jersey
Minors arrested and charged with an act against the law in New Jersey are treated differently than adults. For starters, matters involving minors are handled in the Family Court of Superior Court in the county where the arrest took place.
The goals of the Juvenile Justice System are to rehabilitate and not just send the child to a detention center. The minor needs to understand the seriousness of what they need and want to change their behavior. Everyone makes mistakes regardless of age. Minors especially make mistakes and get into trouble because they are still learning and temptation around them is high. |
If your son or daughter has been arrested, your child must have an attorney depending on what stage the matter is in. The court will appoint a lawyer (Public Defender) if the parent or child can not afford one of their own choice.
It is very important that your child have a lawyer on their side that understands the juvenile system and has appeared before the Judge handling these matters. Matters involving minors are handled very differently than adult matters and your lawyer needs to be familiar with that system. |
